The Guild imports buffalo horn plates and grades them. When the horn is received, it is polished on its primary face to an ultra high-gloss, then is bathed in hot oil and undergoes a secondary pressing. After cleaning excess oil, it undergoes partial desiccation of remaining fats and is rehydrated for durability and flexibility within a low-osmosis humidifying chamber of distilled water. Once all this is complete, it is marked for areas either naturally thinned by the rough edge interfering in the cut (white minus sign), marked for small surface inclusions which may need removal upon final cut (blue dashed line), or severe inclusions and hollow pockets of unusable void (red X mark). Given these properties, weighed against the attractive grain and consistent thickness of horn, mark a piece for its grading rating.
