Nasal Anatomy for Eyewear Fitting

Precise anatomical terminology prevents confusion and enables accurate communication between makers, fitters, and medical professionals. It also prevents a specific and widespread error. The external nose divides into topographic subunits, a classification formalized by Burget and Menick in their foundational 1985 paper on nasal reconstruction.1 They identified nine subunits: the unpaired dorsum, tip, and columella along the midline, and the paired sidewalls, alae, and soft triangles bilaterally.
