Not all woods suit eyewear. The ideal species combines enough hardness to resist wear and hold a sharp edge, fine grain structure to limit tear-out during machining, moderate density to avoid excessive weight, and stable behaviour with minimal movement as humidity changes. Exotic species offer striking aesthetics and additional problems.
